Matt Colville posted on Twitter recently that this generation of 5e players doesn't have a good sense of what a dungeon crawl is versus just adventuring in a dungeon. I certainly think large dungeons or mega-dungeons (tent pole dungeons) can provide a continual and exciting locus of play. This has certainly been replicated in very popular videogames like Darkest Dungeon, Dead Cells, & Hades.

But the information and practice of this form of D&D has been very scant in recent years in mainstream D&D thought. Here are some links to nice articles about megadungeons:

Gus L alludes to them in a conversation about how what "classic" D&D play is and the issues of fitting it to contemporary time/life allotments. Even bored teenagers these days don't have the time they did in the 80's.

Wendell works to break down a 179 room dungeon of Dyson Logos and stock it using the Holmes Basic Edition of D&D. It's a fascinating process and really helps demonstrate how good those tools are and how to infuse "life" into a large dungeon.

Wayne R tells you why you should do the whole thing in the first place

And if you liked all those, then Ava was nice enough to link a whole bunch here at her blog. Also, this blog has a mini-post about megadungeons.
